1. Одни лингвисты считают, что наличие большого количества германо-итало-кельтских инноваций свидетельствует о существовании германо-итало-кельтского языкового единства (см., напр. Порциг 1964), другие, основываясь на общности германо-балто-славянских инноваций говорят о существовании германо-балто-славянского языкового единства (ср., напр., Гамкрелидзе, Иванов 1984). В отношении лексических соответствий также конкурируют две точки зрения, по одной из них более тесные связи были у германского c итало-кельтским и с италийским (Euler 1997), по другой - с балто-славянским (Mańczak 2000).

3. В древнеиндийском также появилась форма творительного падежа, восходящая к индоевропейскому окончанию *-ō, однако она имела вид ā, а не u как в литовском и германском, ср. лит. vilku, др.-вн. wolfu, но др-инд. vrkā (Гамкрелидзе, Иванов 1984: 391).

6. Изменение /ā/ > /ō/ произошло и в протооско-умбрском, однако оно затронуло здесь только конец слова.
7. Сходство закона Вернера с чередованием ступеней проявляется не только в сходстве чередования смычных p t k ~ b d g, но и в чередовании s ~ z и в чередовании ступеней с ассимиляцией ср. фин. им. lintu - родит. linnun ‘птица’, им. ilta - родит. illan ‘вечер’ (Koivulehto, Vennemann 1996: 164-165).
8. Полный список германских слов, у которые когда-либо предполагалось происхождение из неизвестного субстрата можно найти в интернете (McCallister 1999).
9. Предполагается, что даже самое важное слово из субстратного списка (нем. See, англ. sea и т. п.) имеет индоевропейское происхождение, cр., напр., de Vries 1962; Mees 2007.

Кроме ставшего уже традиционным предположения о неизвестном субстрате в германском Феннеманн предположил существование васконского (т. е. прото-баскского) субстрата в европейских индоевропейских языках и семито-хамитского суперстрата в германском (см., напр., Vennemann 1995). Однако, поскольку для большинства слов из списков Феннемана существуют приемлемые индоевропейские этимологии, большинство германистов скептически относятся к его идеям (см., напр., Seebold 1998: 289).
11. Учитывая большую частотность этой гаплогруппы у басков, можно предположить смену языка у индоевропейских носителей этой гаплогруппы, что фактически подтверждало бы гипотезу Феннеманна о васконском субстрате в индоевропейских языках Европы (см. выше).
